#18 THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST INGENIOUS INVENTIONS OF THE CIVIL WAR. I THINK IT'S FAIRLY COMMON KNOWLEDGE THAT THE UNION ARTILLERY HAD EXPERIMENTED WITH VARIOUS IGNITING SYSTEMS FOR THEIR NOSE FUSED SHELLS. THE CONFEDERATE ARTILLERYMEN HAD THE SAME DIFFICULTIES, THAT IS UNTIL THIS INGENIOUS SYSTEM WAS DEVELOPED BY C.A. McEVOY OF RICHMOND VIRGINIA IN 1863. IN THE PICTURES BELOW ONLY 2 OF THE COMPONENTS ARE AUTHENTIC, THE TIME FUSE AND THE McEVOY IGNITER ITSELF, THE WOOD PLUG WAS MADE FOR ILLUSTRATION PURPOSES ONLY. IN OPERATION, THE INERTIA OF THE SHELL FIRING WOULD CAUSE A SERRATED LOOPED WIRE IMBEDDED IN A FULMINATE COMPOUND TO BE WITHDRAWN RAPIDLY WHICH IGNITED THE COMPOUND WHICH HAD BEEN ,THROUGH INERTIA, DEPOSITED UPON THE TIME FUSE CAUSING IT TO IGNITE. THESE FUSE WORKED VERY WELL FOR THE CONFEDERATE ARTILLERYMEN.

#24 I WOULD ALMOST BE WILLING TO BET THAT YOU HAVE NEVER SEEN A BOX OF THIS AMMO LET ALONE A COMPLETE SET OF THE THREE LOADINGS PICTURED. THIS .45 COLT AMMUNITION, 20 ROUNDS TO A BOX, WAS CUSTOM LOADED BY HORNADY USING NEW WINCHESTER BRASS, FOR U.S. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY TEAMS. IT IS MY UNDERSTANDING THAT THEY WERE USED TO SURVEY MOUNTAIN RANGES IN THE DAYS BEFORE GPS SYSTEMS. WHEN SURVEY TEAMS DID NOT HAVE THE BENEFIT OF LINE OF SIGHT. THEY WERE FIRED FROM A COLT REVOLVER THAT WAS FIXED TO AN ADJUSTABLE TRIPOD, THE POSITION TO BE LOCATED BY ANOTHER TEAM MEMBER WITH A TRANSIT. ONE BOX CONTAINS "FINDER" CARTRIDGES, WHICH LEAVES A TRAIL OF WHITE SMOKE FOR AN INITIAL LOCATION. ANOTHER BOX CONTAINS "DAYTIME" CARTRIDGES, WHICH LEAVE A RED TRAIL, FOR LOCATING THE POSITION AGAINST A BACKGROUND OF BLUE SKY OR WHITE CLOUDS. THE THIRD BOX CONTAINS "TRACER" WHICH EMITS A WHITE STREAK FOR MARKING AGAINST AN OVERCAST SKY OR DUSK OR DAWN. *** I HAVE ALSO BEEN TOLD THAT ALL THREE ROUNDS EMIT THE SAME TRACE MATERIAL AND COLOR, WHICH POSES THE QUESTION OF WHY THE THREE BOXES ARE LABELED DIFFERENTLY***THESE ARE THREE FULL 20 ROUND BOX'S. THE TWO EXAMPLE ROUNDS WERE EXTRAS THAT WERE PULLED AND CUT AWAY FOR EXAMINATION AND ARE INCLUDED WITH THE SET         THE HISTORY OF THESE ROUNDS CAN BE FOUND IN A VERY WELL WRITTEN ARTICLE IN ISSUE 466 OF THE IAA JOURNAL MAR/APRIL'09. AUTHORED BY GARY MUCKEL.

      All three boxes $450.00
