# 4 THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST INGENIOUS INVENTIONS OF THE CIVIL WAR. I THINK IT'S FAIRLY COMMON KNOWLEDGE THAT THE UNION ARTILLERY HAD EXPERIMENTED WITH VARIOUS IGNITING SYSTEMS FOR THEIR NOSE FUSED SHELLS. THE CONFEDERATE ARTILLERYMEN HAD THE SAME DIFFICULTIES, THAT IS UNTIL THIS INGENIOUS SYSTEM WAS DEVELOPED BY C.A. McEVOY OF RICHMOND VIRGINIA IN 1863. IN THE PICTURES BELOW ONLY 2 OF THE COMPONENTS ARE AUTHENTIC, THE TIME FUSE AND THE McEVOY IGNITER ITSELF, THE WOOD PLUG WAS MADE FOR ILLUSTRATION PURPOSES ONLY. IN OPERATION, THE INERTIA OF THE SHELL FIRING WOULD CAUSE A SERRATED LOOPED WIRE IMBEDDED IN A FULMINATE COMPOUND TO BE WITHDRAWN RAPIDLY WHICH IGNITED THE COMPOUND WHICH HAD BEEN ,THROUGH INERTIA, DEPOSITED UPON THE TIME FUSE CAUSING IT TO IGNITE. THESE FUSE WORKED VERY WELL FOR THE CONFEDERATE ARTILLERYMEN.
